Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rootcharts?
Rootcharts is a professional futures trading platform with real-time charting, order routing, drawing tools, risk management, and trade statistics. It connects to Tradovate / NinjaTrader accounts and routes orders to all connected accounts simultaneously.
How do I connect my broker account?
Click the Connections icon (wrench) in the right sidebar, then click "Add Account" under Tradovate / NinjaTrader. This opens an OAuth login flow in your browser — once authorized, your accounts appear automatically.

Connected accounts appear in the Accounts panel on the chart page. You can toggle individual accounts on/off to control which ones receive orders.
How do I remove a connected account?
Go to the Connections page and find the account you want to remove. Click the Remove button next to the account. You will be asked to confirm before the account is deleted. This removes the connection from Rootcharts but does not affect your broker account itself.
Can I enable or disable individual accounts for trading?
Yes. In the Accounts panel on the chart page, each account has a toggle switch. When toggled off, that account will not receive any orders — market, limit, or stop — until you turn it back on. This lets you selectively route orders to specific accounts.
How does multi-broker order routing work?
When you place an order (market, limit, or stop), Rootcharts automatically sends it to all active connected accounts simultaneously. The platform resolves the correct contract ID behind the scenes. You can control which accounts receive orders using the toggle switches in the Accounts panel.
How do I place a market order?
There are several ways to place a market order:

Order panel: Set the quantity in the order panel on the right, then click Buy or Sell.

Quick trade buttons: Use the Buy/Sell buttons in the chart header (can be toggled on/off in Trading settings).

Keyboard shortcuts: Set up custom key combinations via right-click → Configure Shortcuts.

Auto Risk Calculator: Enable Auto Risk mode, set your risk amount and stop level, then click Confirm to place a position-sized market order with an automatic stop loss.
How do I place a limit or stop order?
Right-click on the chart at your desired price level. The context menu will show available order types based on where you clicked relative to the current price:

- Above current price: Sell Limit or Buy Stop
- Below current price: Buy Limit or Sell Stop

The order quantity is taken from the order panel. Pending orders appear as price lines on the chart and can be dragged to modify or cancelled from the Pending Orders tab in the positions panel.
How do I set a stop loss or take profit?
After opening a position, you'll see a position overlay on the chart showing your entry price and P&L. You can set SL/TP levels by:

Dragging: Drag the SL or TP handles directly on the chart to adjust levels visually.

Auto Risk Calculator: Use Auto Risk mode which automatically places a stop loss at your configured risk level when entering a position. The stop loss order is sent to all connected broker accounts.

Stop losses are placed as actual stop orders on your connected brokers and will execute even if Rootcharts is closed.
How do I close a position?
Click the X button on the position overlay on the chart to close that specific position. This sends an opposite market order to all connected brokers and cancels any associated stop loss orders.

To close everything at once, click the Flatten & Cancel All button in the order panel. This will close all open positions and cancel all pending orders across all connected accounts.
What is the Auto Risk Calculator?
The Auto Risk Calculator automatically calculates your position size based on a dollar risk amount and stop loss distance. Toggle it on from the Auto Risk button in the chart header toolbar.

How it works: Set your risk amount (e.g. $200), choose a direction (Buy, Sell, or Custom), and drag the stop loss level on the chart. The calculator computes how many contracts you can trade so that if your stop is hit, you lose exactly your risk amount.

Custom mode: In Custom mode, click the SL button that appears and drag it above or below the current price. The system automatically determines whether it's a long or short trade based on where you place the stop.

Click Confirm in the popup to execute the order with the calculated size and automatically place the stop loss on your brokers.
How do I change the symbol?
Press any letter key on your keyboard to open the symbol search dropdown, or click the symbol name (e.g. "NQ") in the chart header. Type to filter and click to select.

Available symbols: NQ (E-mini NASDAQ), MNQ (Micro NASDAQ), ES (E-mini S&P 500), MES (Micro S&P), YM (E-mini Dow), MYM (Micro Dow), GC (Gold), MGC (Micro Gold).

When you switch symbols, real-time data and historical candles automatically update. The matching Tradovate contract is resolved automatically so your orders hit the correct instrument.
How do I change the chart timeframe?
Use the timeframe bar in the chart header to quickly switch between 1m, 5m, 15m, 30m, 1h, 4h, 1D, and 1W intervals.

For custom intervals, click the dropdown arrow on the right side of the timeframe bar and enter any value in minutes or hours.

You can also press any number key (0–9) on your keyboard to open the interval picker popup. Type a number and press Enter to apply that minute interval instantly.
How do I use the drawing tools?
The drawing toolbar is on the left side of the chart. Available tools:

Crosshair: Default mode for chart interaction.
Line: Draw trend lines. Click to set start point, drag to end point. Hold Shift to draw horizontal lines.
Rectangle: Draw rectangular zones for support/resistance areas.
Fibonacci Retracement: Draw Fibonacci levels between two price points.
Long/Short Position: Draw visual position entries with TP/SL areas for planning trades.
Magnet: Snaps drawing points to candlestick OHLC values for precision.

All drawings can be selected, moved, resized, and deleted. Click a drawing to select it and use the toolbar that appears to customize color, thickness, line style, and add text labels. Use Ctrl+click+drag for marquee multi-selection. Press Delete to remove selected drawings. All drawings are saved automatically.
Can I save drawing templates?
Yes. Select a drawing and click the template icon in its toolbar. You can save the current drawing's style (color, thickness, line style) as a named template. To apply a saved template, select a drawing and choose a template from the list. Templates are saved to your browser's local storage.
What is the Movable Toolbar?
The Movable Toolbar is a floating drawing toolbar that you can drag anywhere on the chart. Toggle it on from the Movable Toolbar switch in the chart header. It provides the same drawing tools as the left sidebar toolbar but can be repositioned for convenience. Drag the handle to move it.
How do I set up keyboard shortcuts?
Right-click on the chart and click Configure Shortcuts. You can set custom key combinations for:

Quick Buy: Instantly place a market buy order at current price.
Quick Sell: Instantly place a market sell order at current price.

Click the button next to the action, then press your desired key combo (e.g. Shift+B). The shortcut is saved immediately and works globally while the chart is focused. Press Escape to cancel recording, or click to clear a binding. Shortcuts are synced to your account across sessions.
Can I use multiple charts?
Yes. Click the chart layout icon in the top-right area of the chart header and select 2 Charts. This splits the view into two side-by-side charts, each with its own symbol, timeframe, and quick-trade buttons.

You can also set the default layout from the Customize Layout page (layers icon in the sidebar), where you can choose single or dual chart mode, set default symbols for each chart, and toggle visibility of the order panel, positions panel, and accounts panel.
How do I customize the workspace layout?
Click the Customize Layout icon (layers) in the right sidebar. From there you can:

- Toggle Order Panel, Positions Panel, and Accounts Panel on/off
- Choose Single or Dual chart layout
- Set default symbols for Chart 1 and Chart 2

A live preview shows how your layout will look. Click Save to apply. Settings are saved to your account and sync across sessions.
How do I fullscreen the chart?
Click the expand icon (arrows) in the top-right corner of the chart header. This hides the sidebar, order panel, positions panel, and info bar to give the chart maximum screen space. Click EXIT to return to the normal layout.
How do I customize chart colors?
Click the gear icon in the chart header to open Settings, then go to the Chart tab. You can customize:

Candles: Bull/bear body color, border color, and wick color.
Background: Chart background color.
Grid lines: None, horizontal, vertical, or both — with custom color.
Crosshair: Crosshair line color.
Last price line: The horizontal line showing the current price.
Scales: Axis text and scale line colors.
Timezone: Choose from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, or UTC.

All chart color settings are saved to your account.
What trading settings are available?
Open Settings (gear icon) → Trading tab:

Buy/Sell Buttons: Show or hide quick-trade buttons on the chart header.
Execution Sound: Play a tone when orders are placed. Adjust volume with the slider.
P&L Format: Display position P&L as Money ($125.00), Ticks (5.0t), or Percent (0.05%).
Execution Marks: Show arrow markers on chart candles where orders were filled.
Extended Price Lines: Position and order price lines extend across the full chart width.
Order Alignment: Align position overlays to the left or right side of the chart.

All trading settings are saved and synced to your account.
What is the Positions panel?
The Positions panel at the bottom of the chart page has two tabs:

Positions: Shows all open positions with symbol, direction, quantity, entry price, and real-time P&L. Each position also appears as an overlay on the chart with a colored entry line and P&L label.

Pending Orders: Shows all pending limit and stop orders that have been placed but not yet filled. Orders appear as dashed price lines on the chart and can be dragged to modify their price. Click the X to cancel an order.
What instruments are supported?
Rootcharts currently supports the following CME/CBOT/COMEX futures:

NQ — E-mini NASDAQ 100  |  MNQ — Micro E-mini NASDAQ 100
ES — E-mini S&P 500  |  MES — Micro E-mini S&P 500
YM — E-mini Dow  |  MYM — Micro E-mini Dow
GC — Gold  |  MGC — Micro Gold

Contract IDs are automatically resolved per broker. Real-time data and historical candles are streamed via WebSocket.
Where does the chart data come from?
Rootcharts streams real-time market data via WebSocket connections. Historical candles are fetched on-demand when you switch symbols or timeframes. Candles update live as trades occur, with the current price shown as a horizontal line on the chart. The info bar at the top shows the current OHLC values and volume for the active candle.
What can I do from the right-click menu?
Right-clicking on the chart opens a context menu with:

Search for help: Type a question and press Enter to search the FAQ.
Shortcuts: Shows your configured Quick Buy/Sell shortcuts, plus a Configure Shortcuts button to set new ones.
Place Order: Limit and stop order options based on the clicked price level.
Settings: Quick access to open the Settings popup.
Are my settings saved across devices?
Yes. All settings — chart colors, trading preferences, layout configuration, keyboard shortcuts, and connected accounts — are saved both locally (for instant loading) and to Firebase Firestore (for cloud sync). When you log in on a different device, your settings are automatically restored.
How do I create an account or log in?
Rootcharts uses Firebase Authentication. You can sign up with your email and password from the login screen. Once registered, your account stores all your settings, connections, and preferences. To log out, click the logout icon at the bottom of the right sidebar.
